The history

2014

• Bioextrax was founded in Lund February 6, 2014.

• A patent application regarding extraction of PHA (bioplastics) technology is submitted November 25,  2014.

2015
• Lund University Holding invests in Bioextrax.
2016

• Bioextrax receives funding from Nordic Innovation Fund for development of the technology to convert feathers to protein ingredients in animal feed.

2018

• Bioextrax submits patent application for the process where feathers are converted into microfibers.

• Bioextrax moves the office from the Kemicentrum at Lund university to larger spaces at Ideon Science Park in Lund.

• Edvard Hall is employed as CEO after serving as consultant since 2017.

2019

A new management team and Board are assembled while preparing for trading on the Stock Market.

• Membership of GO!PHA is an important milestone, enabling Bioextrax to accelerate on its vision to contribute to a more sustainable economy.

2020

• Patents are granted in the EU and US for the Bioextrax biobased method to extract PHA from PHA producing bacteria.

• Bioextrax is traded on Spotlight Stock Market, first day of trade is April 28, 2020.

• The Bioextrax team is growing rapidly to eight people by the end of the year.

2021

• Bioextrax submits patent application regarding a cost-efficient production process for PHAs using sucrose as raw materials

• An Advisory Board is established to further strengthen the organization

2022

• Strengthen organization

• Granted patent PHA using sucros

• List change to Nasdaq First North Growth Market

• Ramp up for future growth

2023

• Moved to new and larger facilities in Lund

• Installed and started production in pilot-scale fermentation plant

Edvard Hall

Born 1985. Chief Executive Officer​ since 2023

Member of management team since 2018. Edvard Hall holds a law degree and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Lund University as well as an MSc International Development and Humanitarian Emergencies from London School of Economics and Political Science. Edvard Hall has a background from a law firm and as a management consultant, entrepreneur and investor with experience in building, running and developing innovative companies in the field of sustainability. Edvard Hall has previously co-founded and run companies active in narrative analysis, strategy advice and medical technology.

Kristofer Svensson

Kristofer Svensson

Born 1982. Chief Financial Officer since 2023.

Kristofer Svensson holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Stockholm University. Kristofer has several years of experience from financial executive positions as CFO, primarily within the healthcare sector. Kristofer Svensson has ongoing assignments as CFO at Gabather (publ), Ectin Research (publ) and Sinfonia Biotherapeutics. Previous assignment includes CFO at Sensidose (publ) and Melius pharma.

Klas Ingstorp

Klas Ingstorp

Born 1971. Chief Operating Officer since 2022.

Klas Ingstorp holds a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from Lund University. Klas Ingstorp has more than 25 years of experience from the process chemistry company Perstorp and has, among other things, been active as factory manager for special polyol manufacturing, site manager for feed additive production, head of global Perstorp Engineering groups and responsible for EHSQ (Enviroment, Health, Safety and Quality Systems) within Perstorp Global Technology.

Mats Persson

Born 1963.  Chairperson since 2022.

Mats Persson holds a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from Lund University. Mats Persson’s previous positions include several senior positions within the Perstorp Group, including deputy CEO. In addition, Mats Persson has worked as Chief Operating Officer at the composite manufacturer Diab with responsibility for, among other things, manufacturing and logistics.

Born 1970. Board member since 2024.

Marie

Marie Grönborg holds a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering. Grönborg has 30 years of experience in various industrial sectors, primarily focused on the chemical industry. Grönborg spent 25 years at Perstorp Group, where she held key positions, including Executive Vice President Global Innovation and Business Area Specialties & Solutions . Most recently, Grönborg acted as the CEO of Purac and Tree To Textile.

Håkan Björnberg​

Born 1959. Board member since 2019.

Håkan Björnberg holds a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from Lund University. Håkan Björnberg has 40 years of experience from research and development work as well as business development in the chemical industry and a long experience of commercializing innovations. Recently Håkan Björnberg was Vice President Innovation at Perstorp AB and responsible for the business development and Innovation of Perstorp’s strategic markets including plastics, paints, synthetic lubricants and additives for animal feed. Håkan currently has a senior advisory position at Perstorp AB.

Fredrik Sjödin

Born 1974. Board member since 2021.

Fredrik Sjödin holds a Master of Science in Business and Economics from the Stockholm School of Economics. Fredrik Sjödin has extensive experience of investments and board assignments in private and public companies. Fredrik Sjödin has a background from the American investment companies KKR and Sageview Capital as well as the investment bank Salomon Smith Barney. Fredrik Sjödin is the founder and Investment Manager of the investment company Tramontane Invest.

Mohammad H.A. Ibrahim holds a PhD in Microbiology and Biotechnology from the University of Minster, Germany. Mohammad H.A. Ibrahim is the founder of Bioextrax and has more than 20 years experience in Research and Development of microbial production of polymers, enzymes and chemicals, publishing several scientific articles and patents. Mohammad has worked as postdoctoral researcher at Lund University, Sweden, the University of Hawaii, USA, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA, among others.

Alexander Steinbüchel

Alexander Steinbüchel

Alexander Steinbüchel is a Professor at Münster University in Germany. For many years, he was Head of the Department for Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology. Professor Steinbüchel is known as one of the founding fathers of the entire PHA industry, contributing to establishing PHA as a research area and setting the scene for commercialisation of the materials. Prior to this position, Alexander worked as an Advisor at Monsanto, today part of Bayer.

Yossi Shabtai started as Researcher at MIT and has held positions like Principal Scientist and Director of Fermentation Operation at Metabolix. The company was a pioneer in the industry and one of the, first major producers of the bioplastic PHA. Today, Yossi is a global” Thought Leader” within the PHA area.

Jan Ravenstijn

Jan has held global executive R&D director positions at both Dow Chemical and DSM for 15 years across different polymer business units (engineering plastics, epoxy resins, and elastomers). He is a member of the Global Expert Team on renewable feedstock-based materials of the Nova Institute and member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Aachen Maastricht Institute for Biomaterials. Jan is the Co-founder and Board member of the global organization for the PHA-platform: GO!PHA.

Kjell Ivar Bache

Kjell Ivar Bache has a master’s in economics from Cambridge University. He has for the past twenty years held managerial positions with the Norwegian business industry. Since 2014 he is the CEO for BioBag Group, which is a leading producer and supplier of compostable and biodegradable products. BioBag Group, headquarted in Norway, was recently acquired by Novamont.
